If salt crystallises on the pointer, this can lead to inaccurate readings. If salt crystallises in the hydrometer, soak the hydrometer in warm water or vinegar 30 minutes, then rinse with water and air dry.

1. Insert the hydrometer 15cm below the surface of the tank or pond until the water overflows the baffle (fill slowly to prevent air bubbles from adhering to the needle).

2. When the water is full (level with the top of the baffle), take out the hydrometer and place it on a level surface.

3. Air bubbles adhering to the pointer will cause inaccurate readings. Carefully tap the hydrometer to shake out any adhering air bubbles.

4. Read the specific gravity on the inner scale and the salinity (PPT) on the outer scale. It is recommended that the specific gravity of seawater in seafood pond is between 1.020 and 1.023, i.e. within the safety line.

5. Rinse with water after each use.
